Alaska's Finest Outfitter

About The Prospector

The first Prospector Outfitters was opened in North Pole, Alaska, in 1985 by Warren and Marianne Prax, and Kerry and Linda Gronewold. The goal: To be the finest outfitting store in Alaska. Recognizing how important reliable gear is when venturing out to Alaska’s extremes—where temperatures can vary from -60F in the winter to 90F in the summer, and where winds scream and snow and rain fall in tremendous quantities—Prospector Outfitters set out to provide the best gear available because when the weather turns nasty in Alaska, the last thing anyone needs is to find their gear is not up to the task.

In 1989, Prospector Outfitters opened a new store in Valdez, Alaska. In 1995, we moved the North Pole store to Fairbanks and expanded it to 12,000 square feet. The Fairbanks store later expanded to 27,000 square feet.

In 1999, Joe Prax became the president of Prospector Outfitters, with stores in Fairbanks and Valdez and customers across the globe. Though founders Warren and Marianne Prax have both passed away, their goal of being the finest outfitting store in Alaska lives on.

The Prospector is dedicated to providing exceptional service in support of a broad selection of high-quality products at competitive prices.
